Rehabilitation of a Wastewater Pumping Station in a Confined Space
Home > Realisations > Rehabilitation of a Wastewater Pumping Station in a Confined Space
In 2024, we welcomed the Gagnon team into our family. Since then, our expertise in industrial pumps and pumping systems has grown and strengthened Omnifab’s position as a leader in Quebec.
So it’s no coincidence that when a major shopping center in the Montreal area (Carrefour Laval) needed to upgrade its wastewater pumping station, they turned to us.
Below, you’ll find pictures of this project and a summary of its realization. But first, let’s take a quick look at what a wastewater pumping station is.
What is a Wastewater Pumping Station?
A wastewater pumping station is an essential facility in the wastewater network. It transports wastewater from a low point (such as a basement or sloped area) to a higher level, where it can then flow by gravity to a treatment plant.
These systems are critical in commercial and industrial infrastructures, where large volumes of water often need to be managed. They play a key role in preventing overflows, reducing contamination risks, and ensuring the smooth operation of buildings.
Here is a list of the main components typically found in a wastewater pumping station:
- Industrial pumps: Often submersible or centrifugal, these are the heart of the system for transporting wastewater.
- Control panels: Manage and monitor pump operation.
- Floats or level sensors: Detect water level to activate or deactivate pumps.
- Valves and check valves: Regulate flow and prevent backflow.
- Piping and collectors: Route water to the pumps and out of the station.
- Ventilation system: Evacuates potentially hazardous gases for the safety and durability of the plant.
We’re here to help you tackle your pumping challenges.
A Turnkey Project: From Selection to Installation
Our team managed the pumping station rehabilitation project from start to finish, ensuring comprehensive and meticulous oversight at every step:
- Selection of pumps and control panels tailored to the specific needs of the infrastructure, taking into account the volumes to be handled. The equipment had to combine optimal performance, reliability, and durability.
- Dismantling of the previous installation, carefully executed to ensure the system remained fully operational throughout the process, avoiding any disruption to the shopping center’s activities.
- Installation of the new system to maximize efficiency and facilitate future maintenance. Our experts ensured:
- Optimal integration of the new pumps and control panel within the available space, addressing the constraints of limited access through the manhole.
- Strategic positioning of each component to simplify maintenance and cleaning tasks, thereby reducing the risk of unexpected downtime.
- Thorough testing to ensure optimal performance from the outset while training the client’s teams for quick and effective system handling.
The Challenge of Working in a Confined Space
This project involved specific challenges related to working in a confined space, an environment with unique risks where safety must be the top priority. Our experts adhered to strict protocols to comply with current regulations.
The restricted access through the manhole also required precise planning to ensure technician safety and streamline installation steps.
