Refurbishment and improvement of an industrial extraction fan

A few weeks ago, one of our clients in the petrochemical sector, who had previously benefited from our mobile machining and conveyor repair services, entrusted us with a new mandate: the refurbishment and modification of an extraction fan located on the roof of their Montreal plant.

As usual, our team rose to the challenge, successfully completing this project within the set deadlines. Here’s how we achieved it.

AN EXTRACTION FAN AFFECTED BY SEVERAL PROBLEMS

This extraction fan, as it serves as the air intake for the petrochemical plant’s compressors, draws air from the outside. Unfortunately, due to its inadequate design, it was vulnerable to the accumulation of water and snow.

Because of water infiltration into the fan, it had suffered damage, particularly to the frame, which had started to deteriorate.

That’s why, to solve the problem once and for all, we decided to not only refurbish the fan but also to modify it to ensure proper water drainage.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MEETING TIGHT DEADLINES

Given the crucial role of this fan in the plant’s operations, we had to meet a very strict schedule and tight deadlines. So we took advantage of a plant shutdown to dismantle the fan.

Afterward, we had a 4-week window to perform the repairs, enhancements, and installation of the industrial fan.

Needless to say, we met the deadline, just as promised!

A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT INVOLVING MULTIPLE DEPARTMENTS

In a project like this, it’s not uncommon for several of our departments to get involved.

In this case, our external industrial mechanics team went on-site to dismantle the fan and transport it to our installations. They also returned to the client’s location to reinstall it.

At our workshop, our internal mechanics and welding departments not only repaired the damaged mechanical components but also the structure weakened by rot. We removed the unrepairable part and fabricated an identical one for replacement.

Under the supervision of our engineers, our mechanics and welders also added a water passage with a bypass. This addition will prevent water or snow accumulation in the fan.

Finally, our electric motor specialists ensured that the motor powering the fan’s blades was thoroughly checked. After inspection, they replaced the bearings in the motor.
