Design and Manufacturing of a Custom Metal Walkway
Over the last few months, a mining sector client approached us with a mandate to secure an industrial infrastructure: the custom design and fabrication of a removable metal walkway bridge.
In this text, you’ll find out how our teams went about creating this industrial walkway that perfectly aligned with all of our client’s requirements.
OUR MISSION: FACILITATING AND SECURING MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS
When the client entrusted us with this project, they gave us several guidelines and relevant information.
Their primary goal was to facilitate the task of the workers responsible for maintaining a large industrial fan located on the roof of their factory (greasing, motor inspection, etc.).
However, since the factory’s roof is only accessible via ladders, the client wanted the walkway to be detachable to allow operators to transport it piece by piece.
CHALLENGES RELATED TO CREATING THIS CUSTOM WALKWAY
The manufacture of height safety equipment, such as access walkways, is subject to stringent standards aimed at reducing the risks of falls and accidents in the workplace.
This implies that although the design of a metal walkway may seem straightforward initially, it involves mechanical engineering work that requires a thorough understanding of applicable regulations.
In addition, our engineers needed to ensure that the walkway’s detachability didn’t compromise its structural integrity. Also, the assembly and disassembly operations had to be as straightforward as possible, and achievable with lightweight tools.
Our designers also had to ensure that the walkway’s height and dimensions provided the fan maintenance team with a comfortable working position.
A PROJECT INVOLVING SEVERAL DEPARTMENTS
Carrying out a mechanical manufacturing project like this requires the contribution of several different stakeholders.
First of all, our engineers developed a concept that fully complied with the constraints imposed by the client and the authorities involved in worker safety (CNESST, RSST, CSA and ISO standards, etc.).
In the case of a walkway bridge, for example, we had to choose non-slip materials for the floor and ensure that the were of the regulatory height.
Next, we had to give shape to the industrial drawings. This is where our experts in machining, laser cutting, welding, and electrostatic painting intervened. In a project like this, respecting the dimensions and other details indicated on the plans was essential, as the slightest imperfection could make assembling the walkway difficult.
This is why the manufacturing quality of the various components of the metal walkway was then verified using advanced.
